Magnesium

“I’ve already tried magnesium — it did nothing.”

I hear this regularly. And the honest answer is: that’s often not a magnesium problem. It’s an absorption problem.

Magnesium is involved in over 300 enzyme processes in the body — essential for energy production, sleep, muscle function, and nervous system regulation. A very significant number of Irish adults are deficient. But taking a supplement and actually absorbing it are two very different things.

Three things get in the way. Low stomach acid — far more common than people realize — means minerals don’t get broken down properly before reaching the gut. Some people are simply poor absorbers at the intestinal level. And then there are what I call magnesium wasters — people whose kidneys excrete magnesium faster than they can replace it, often driven by chronic stress.

If you’re in any of those categories, an oral supplement alone may not move the needle.

The form matters enormously. We stock Tri-Mag Complex, which combines three distinct forms — magnesium malate (energy production and muscle recovery), magnesium bisglycinate chelate (gentle on the gut, calming for the nervous system), and magnesium taurate, which supports cardiovascular health and nervous system function via the taurine pathway. The formula also includes Vitamin B6 as P5P and Boron — cofactors that improve magnesium retention at the cellular level, so the combination I recommend in practice is already built into the product.

For people who don’t absorb well, Taurine combined with B6 acts as a cofactor that significantly improves magnesium retention at the cellular level — a combination I use a lot in practice. And for those who are genuinely depleted, IV magnesium and calcium infusions — available at Drummartin Clinic — can give the body a reset that oral supplementation alone simply can’t achieve.
